Donnie Darko - Director's Cut Premiere
Jake Gyllenhaal has not one, but two huge films premiering this week, along with the premiere of The Day After Tomorrow, the re-release of Donnie Darko premieres on May 29th at the Seattle International Film Festival. The original was put together so fast that the people behind it were unsure of the cohesiveness of the final cut. “We feel that the original never reached its full potential in initial release,” stated executive producer Aaron Ryder, and it was, after all, shot in 28 days…strangely, the exact same time span in which the story takes place. But the cast and crew had nothing to fear, since its 2001 release, Donnie Darko has gathered a huge cult fanbase and consistently been one of the top searched for films on IMDB, making it to the top 50 out of over 290,000 titles.
With the new cut you can look forward to 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage as well as some new music, which is exciting enough considering the great collection of music featured in the original. It featured an intriguing score, a great mix of ‘80’s pop, and the widely sought after Tears For Fears remake performed by Gary Jules, “Mad World.” More importantly, you get some more insight into director Richard Kelly’s original idea for the film. “We all feel this cut of the film offers a more accessible look into the story of Donnie Darko, while at the same time providing a more thorough representation of Richard's original vision,” Ryder comments.
The film takes place in October 1988, during the Bush-Dukakis debates. It begins on the second of the month, on which night Donnie Darko (played by Gyllenhaal) is woken by a human-size demonic bunny who leads him from his room, causing Donnie to escape death as a plane engine crashes into his bedroom later that night. Aside from fate; the movie deals with isolation, particularly of kids in the school systems; time travel; and many other topics you can find discussed in great detail across the web. And that’s part of the great charm of this film, you can theorize about it to no end, the twisty-turny plot as well as all of the underlying themes. The film also stars Jake Gyllenhaal’s sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, and James Duval.
And if you haven’t yet, I highly recommend checking out the official site, almost as bizarre and intriguing as the film itself.
